Triffle’s Complexity of Naïve Souls

Imago’s Artistic Co-Director Carol Triffle began writing and creating theatre in the late 70’s. However, in 2006 she began to write in a different voice. Combining a dry almost anti theatre style of Richard Maxwell with the clown theatre of Jacques Lecoq, Triffle wrote three plays Hit Me in the Stomach, Mix Up and The Dinner from 2006 to 2008. Simple People, her fourth work in this genre will play at Imago Theatre, 17 SE 8th, from May 28 to June 13 for nine performance only, on Thursdays at 7:30, Fridays & Saturdays at 8 PM. Ticket prices are $15 and can be purchased at TicketsWest at 503.224.8499 or at the door prior to each show (box office opens one hour before show time.) This show is recommended for high school and older.

Triffle travels in an American suburban landscape that is falling off a cultural precipice. A trailer park couple longs for redemption by taking a trip to a casino in Hit Me in the Stomach. In The Dinner, Deloras seeks salvation from a famous writer (which she may have or may not have made love to in the closet at Powell’s books.) Simple People finds her latest herione Amy homeless after being laid off from Lehman Brothers. Amy, performed by Danielle Vermette, wonders into a soup kitchen where she discovers a horde of homeless Wall Street executives. Veteran Imago actress Danielle Vermette has played most of Triffle’s heroins by shaping her roles with different shades of a vulnerable yet resilient clown.

Another key Triffle collaborator for Simple People is Katie Griesar, Imago’s resident composer. The Triffle Griesar partnership has lasted a decade and resulted in string of music-theatre originals with Triffle writing book and lyrics and Griesar composing the music.

Artistic Co-Director Jerry Mouawad pops in now and then with supporting male leads, but Triffle’s Universe is a woman’s world. A world holding onto the precipice of itself. Kyle Delarmarter and Darren McCarthy, two triffle regulars join the cast, also as outcast executives.
